The rally in Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) shares today is due in part to “market chatter” that the company could be acquired by a China-based telecom equipment company, according to Reuters.
The story noted that both ZTE and Huawei “have been expanding their operations aggressively in overseas markets.”
Any acquisition would be a substantial deal; the company has a current market cap of close to $9 billion. The story theorizes an acquisition price in the $11.3 billion to $12.6 billion range.
