First XI: World Cup attackers


"This week's First XI selection looks at attackers. Some are out-and-out poachers, others second strikers, with some players arguably eligible for our earlier selection of attacking midfielders.

With attackers so often the heroes, many top-class players failed to make the cut, so honourable mentions go to the likes of Telmo Zarra, Sandor Kocsis, Raymond Kopa, Roberto Baggio, Jurgen Klinsmann, Uwe Seeler, Mario Kempes, Careca, Gary Lineker and Geoff Hurst.

Giuseppe Meazza (Italy) A supremely talented inside forward who was as adept in creating goals as scoring them, Meazza was a showman on the field and an incorrigible playboy off it. He is the most famous member of the Italy side that won successive World Cups in 1934 and 1938, and he finished his international career with 33 goals in 53 internationals. Vittorio Pozzo, Italy's coach from 1929 to 1948, said "having him in your side meant you kicked off 1-0 up", while goalkeeper Aldo Olivieri, a 1938 World Cup winner, said playing alongside Meazza "was like playing with 12 against 11.""
